Education
John Joseph Mearsheimer, an American scholar of international relations, is known for his theory of offensive realism. Born in 1947, he served in the Air Force and earned a master's degree and Ph.D. in international relations from the University of Southern California and Cornell University. Mearsheimer is a professor of political science at the University of Chicago and has published several books, including Conventional Deterrence, Nuclear Deterrence, Liddell Hart, The Tragedy of Great Power Politics, The Israel Lobby, and Why Leaders Lie. I am the R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor in the Political Science Department at the University of Chicago, where I have taught since 1982. I am a realist, which means that I believe that the great powers dominate the international system, and they constantly engage in security competition with each other, which sometimes leads to war.
