Why did my video get a lot of impressions initially but then drop significantly?

I uploaded a gaming video that received 12,000 impressions on its first day, but now, just two days later, it's only getting about 100 impressions. I had a decent click-through rate of 15%, but it seems like YouTube has stopped promoting my video. Has anyone else experienced this? What could be the reasons behind this sudden drop?

One thing that can really affect impressions is the time of year. For example, as back-to-school season approaches, audiences shift their focus, which can impact your views and impressions. I've seen fluctuations in my channels during similar transitions, so it’s worth considering how external factors, like school schedules, might be influencing viewer behavior.

I've definitely experienced similar situations with my videos. YouTube tends to push new uploads to your core audience first—your subscribers and viewers who have engaged with your previous content. This initial boost can lead to a spike in impressions, but if the video doesn't perform well with this group, the algorithm may throttle its reach. It's like a test to see how well it resonates with your existing audience before potentially promoting it to a broader audience.

Engagement doesn’t always guarantee sustained impressions. The algorithm can feel very random at times, almost like a coin toss. I’ve had videos that received a lot of engagement initially but then saw a sharp decline in impressions. It’s frustrating, but it’s a common experience among creators. Just keep making content and learning from each upload.

What I've noticed is that this initial push usually lasts about 1 to 3 days, depending on viewer interest. If your video retains viewers and maintains a good click-through rate, it might continue to gain impressions. However, if it's not sustaining interest or if the topic isn't trending, you might see a significant drop. SEO plays a massive role too—having an engaging title and description can help improve visibility in searches.

If you’re struggling with impressions and CTR, I recommend experimenting with your thumbnails. I’ve found that creating eye-catching thumbnails can significantly improve click-through rates. Sometimes, it’s just about capturing the audience’s attention in a crowded feed. So, don’t hesitate to test out different designs to see what resonates best.
